y’all still writing poetry? / in this economy / of language / all drippy w syntax & / miracles? / y’all still sending snapchats / with the gender-swap filter / with which i was once told my boy body / looked like the type of man / who would steal your toyota corolla / & flip it at the used car auction / on pond branch rd? / idk. / i’ve never had a snapchat / or a left lateral incisor / that doesn’t jut out / just enough for my own mouth / to notice / nonetheless, i feel / the inevitable has-been. / the recurring dream where my now-dead grandmother / searches for arrowheads / in the riverbed / near her childhood home. / she doesn’t know poetry / or property lines / but she knows about the archangels / huddled around the breaker box / of apartamento 2040. / how they preen for the rising / sun: / unyielding & bodiless / vessels of language who / never made it across the border / yet here we are. / listen, y’all don’t wait up / for us / or for the stock / market to unbury itself / or for the boys / hunting their own ghosts / down by the river bar / to show up back / at school. / i don’t know/ where we’re going but / the solitude / is mostly self-induced. / the inverse of speech / is still speech. / the inverse of nothing / is here.
